The Women’s Major Group (WMG) was created in 1992 at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, when governments decided to recognize women as one of the nine important groups in society which are necessary to achieve sustainable development. The WMG is self-organized and open to all interested organizations working on women’s human rights, women’s empowerment and gender equality. The WMG is responsible for facilitating its members input into UN processes (e.g. providing access to documents, submitting proposals, speaking and participating). CHOICE is one of the members of the WMG and engages with them during the Commission on the Status of Women.
