Learning by Doing

Learning by doing is an important capacity strengthening strategy within CHOICE. Learning by doing means that advocates gain valuable skills and knowledge by actually doing the activities they want to strengthen their capacity on. We see this as an important way to transfer expert knowledge within our organization, and to strengthen the capacity of young advocates, while also simultaneously building their confidence and self-esteem.

Lesbian

A sexual orientation whereby a female-identified person is aesthetically, romantically, sensually and/or sexually attracted to other female-identified persons.

LGBTQIA+

Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Questioning/Queer, Intersex, Asexual. This is an ever changing acronym often used to refer to people of diverse sexual orientations and gender identities, although it is now often replaced with the acronym SOGIESC (Sexual Orientation, Gender Identity and Expression, and Sex Characteristics) which is considered more inclusive, since the term LGBTIQA+ also leaves out a lot of different identities and expressions.

To make the term more inclusive you may sometimes also see additional letters added, such as SGL (same gender loving, which is sometimes favoured by some African American men in the United States as a way of distinguishing themselves from what they regard as the white-dominated LGBT communities), U (unsure), C (curious), TS/2 (two-spirited, a term preferred by some over ‘transgender’), SA (straight allies), P (polyamorous), H (HIV-infected), O (other), TIH (used in India to denote the hijra third gender identity and related subculture), A (ally), P (pansexual), and T (transsexual).

Listserv

A listserv is an email list where information is shared and issues are discussed. Listserv’s are often used by groups wanting to advocate at the United Nations (UN) to strategize and share information with each other.

Lobbying

Lobbying is a specific type of advocacy focused on influencing policies or legislation. Lobbying may form part of an advocacy strategy, the difference here is really that lobbying is focused on policies and legislation while advocacy may be more general and can include for example awareness-raising campaigns, newspaper articles about issues, etc. .
